شہاب صاحب، علی بخش اور علامہ اقبال

شہاب صاحب علامہ اقبال کے ملازم حاجی علی بخش کا موڈ اچھا کرنے کے لیے سوال کرتے ہیں (جس زمانے شہاب صاحب ضلع جھنگ کے ڈپٹی کمشنر تھے) :

"حاجی صاحب، کیا آپ کو ڈاکٹر صاحب (اقبال) کے کچھ شعر یاد ہیں؟"

علی بخش ہنس کر ٹالتا ہے: "میں تو ان پڑھ جاہل ہوں۔ مجھے ان باتوں کی بھلا کیا عقل؟"

"میں نہیں مانتا،" میں نے اصرار کیا، "آپ کو ضرور کچھ یاد ہوگا"

"کبھی اے حکیکت منتجر والا کچھ کچھ یاد ہے۔ ڈاکٹر صاحب اس کو خود بھی بہت گنگنایا کرتے تھے"۔
"ڈاکٹر صاحب عام طور پر مجھے اپنے کمرے کے بالکل نزدیک سلایا کرتے تھے۔ رات کو دو ڈھائی بجے دبے پاؤں اٹھتے تھے اور وضو کرکے جانماز پر جا پیٹھتے تھے۔ نماز پڑھ کر وہ دیر تک سجدے میں پڑے رہتے تھے۔ فارغ پو کر بستر پر آلیٹتے تھے۔ میں حقہ تازہ کرکے لا رکھتا تھا۔ کبھی ایک کبھی دو کش لگاتے تھے۔ کبھی آنکھ لگ جاتی تھی۔ بس صبح تک اسی طرح کروٹیں بدلتے رہتے تھے۔

ڈاکٹر صاحب میں ایک عجیب بات تھی۔ کبھی کبھی رات کو سوتے سوتے ایک جھٹکا سا لگتا تھا اور وہ مجھے آواز دیتے تھے۔ انھوں نے مجھے ہدایت کر رکھی تھی کہ ایسے موقع پر میں فورا” ان کی گردن کی پچھلی رگوں اور پٹھوں کو زور زور سے دبایا کروں۔ تھوڑی دیر کے بعد وہ کہتے تھے بس۔ اور میں دبانا چھوڑ دیتا تھا۔ اسی وجہ سے وہ مجھے اپنے نزدیک سلایا کرتے تھے۔


Shahab saab tries to cheer up Ali Bakhsh and asks (during the days in which Shahab saab was the Deputy Commissioner of Jhang district):

"Haji sahib, do you remember any verses of Doctor saab (Iqbal)?"

Ali Bakhsh laughs and says, "I am an illiterate person. What sense might I have of the knowledge of what he used to say?"

"I find this hard to digest", I stressed, "You must surely recall something"

"I remember the verse which went something like 'Sometimes oh awaited reality'.. Doctor saab used to hum that verse a lot. Doctor saab usually used to give me a place to sleep very near to his room. He used to wake up at 2:00 or 2:30 at night, do ablution and go sit on the praying carpet. After prayer, he used to remain in a state of prostration for a long time. After which he used to return and lie down on the bed. I used to prepare fresh "huqqa" (traditional smoking pipe). He used to take one or two puffs. Sometimes he would fall asleep. He used to change sides during sleep all night.

There was something unusual about Doctor sahib. Often during sleep he would get a shock and he would call me. He had directed me before that whenever such a situation would arise, I was to rub the veins behind his neck and his shoulders. A while later he would tell me to stop. And I would stop rubbing. It was for this reason he told me to sleep near him"
